Word Count Rules

Word Count:

It is generally acceptable to be 10% above or below the specified word count of an assignment (e.g. a 2000 word assignment can be between 1800 and 2200 words.) If your word count falls out of this scope (i.e. is more than 10% over or under) then it is probable that you have not answered the question appropriately and may be penalised.

Unless advised by the lecturer, the word count generally does not include:

  • Title and contents page
  • Footnotes
  • Longer passages quoted from Scripture that are indented
  • Bibliography

If your assignment is too short, then you need to explain your ideas more fully. If your assignment is too large, then you need to be more concise and avoid repetition.
